Another day at the doctor's office....

Maryam woke up this morning still sick. We took her to see her pediatrician, Dr. Mohan and she was almost startled by what she saw. Maryam has lost a whole pound in only a week. The doctor ordered IV fluids and told us she couldn't leave until she peed. And then informed us that if she did not pee, she would be admitted for dehydration. The first dose of fluids didn't result in urine, so she had another dose of fluids. Finally, after nearly 4 hours in the doctor's office, she peed! Hooray. She was so dehydrated that she didn't have tears or saliva and her lips were chapped. The doctor scheduled Maryam to be back tomorrow for another assessment. She ordered Maryam to have only Pedialite for 24 hours and to come back tomorrow for a weight check and assessment. She wants Maryam to be seen to make sure that she doesn't lose anymore weight and to make sure that she is sufficiently hydrated. If she loses anymore weight and/or is still dehydrated, unfortunately she will have to be admitted to the hospital for dehydration. None of us, including her doctor, want that. She will just get sicker in the hospital because she'll be exposed to way more.
Because Maryam is such a hard stick because of all of her scar tissue from other IV's, Maryam's doctor sent her home with the IV still in place. The nurse taught me how to flush the line before we left the office and gave me instructions to flush it again tonight. We have to report back to the doctor's office in the morning to have her IV flushed again and checked to make sure it hasn't collapsed. The doctor will be in rounds until 1pm so she won't see the pediatrician until 1:30. Hopefully it will be determined that she won't have to be admitted to the hospital.
